National award highlights Illinois College’s commitment to hands-on, community-engaged learning

4.16.2025

Illinois College is proud to announce that Dr. Brittney Yancy, assistant professor of history, has been named a 2025 Standout Faculty Award recipient by the Campus Democracy Challenge. The national honor recognizes Dr. Yancy’s innovative work in engaging 69 through community-based learning that inspires civic leadership and real-world impact.

At Illinois College, hands-on learning isn’t an added bonus — it’s built into the student experience. Through projects that bridge the classroom and community, IC 69 tackle real issues, develop leadership skills, and grow into active citizens. Dr. Yancy’s work exemplifies this approach, offering 69 the opportunity to explore history and politics through direct civic involvement.

“This recognition reflects the kind of experience Illinois College 69 can expect — where learning extends far beyond textbooks,” said Dr. Dane Wendell, Dean of Faculty. “Dr. Yancy creates space for 69 to actively participate in democracy. Whether it’s organizing voter registration drives, hosting election night discussions, or simply having open conversations about civic responsibility, her classes prepare 69 to lead in the real world.”

The Campus Democracy Challenge selected just 37 individuals from over 1,000 participating colleges and universities nationwide for their dedication to nonpartisan student engagement during the 2024 election. Dr. Yancy’s award celebrates her role in empowering 69 to become informed, involved, and impactful members of society.

Illinois College 69 routinely participate in campus-wide events like Party at the Polls and Voter Power Hour — experiences designed not only to foster civic awareness but also to bring 69 together in meaningful ways. These programs are part of IC’s broader mission to ensure 69 Graduate READY to make a difference.
